Care Homes – Picking the Right One

So you’ve decided a care home is the best senior living option for your loved one – great choice! Now for the harder part – how do you find a good one?

There are over 400 care homes in Contra Costa County alone, all with variable quality. The basic state requirements are just that: basic. Just because a care home is licensed and even though it may be located in a nice area such as Lafayette, Orinda, Alamo or Moraga, doesn’t mean it is good.

Here are some of the criteria Memento Care Home Network uses to identify their top notch care homes:

Curb Appeal:  Is the home in good repair? It should look inviting and “blend-into” the neighborhood.

Customer Service: Are you greeted by a warm, friendly, helpful person? You should be!

Comfort: Is the temperature comfortable; does the furniture look and feel good?

The smell test:  There should be no strong odors of cleaning chemicals, urine or overpowering food smells. It should smell clean.

The taste test: How does the food taste? Nutritious, good quality and yummy are the goals.

The smile test:  Most importantly – are the residents smiling? They should be clean, well-groomed and happy!

About Memento:  Memento Care Homes combine the intimacy and personal attention of small residential care homes with the services, training, and amenities of a large organization.  Small Homes...Large Resources - that's Memento Care.  Memento Care Homes are located in a growing number of northern California communities including Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, Danville, Concord, and Pleasant Hill.  Please visit us at for more information.
